Many nominees and celebrities like Colin Farrell, Michelle Yeoh, Ariana DeBose, Jodie Turner-Smith, and others attended the event.
The Oscar-winning actress Ariana DeBose dialed the heat up with her Fendi Haute Couture and Bulgari jewelry. In 2022, Ariana won big at every major awards show for Steven Spielberg’s ‘West Side Story’. She created history by becoming the first queer woman of color to win an Oscar. For BAFTAs 2023, Ariana staged a performance acknowledging the actresses and empowering them through a rap performance. However, the internet did not take it well and criticized her performance.

It was a missed opportunity for the ‘Hamilton’ actress Ariana DeBose! During the awards ceremony, Ariana came out to perform supporting women nominated during the night and hype them up. From Angela Bassett to Ana De Armas, she covered almost every nominee while going out of breath, but still pushed the performance forward. When she came on stage, DeBose performed Eurythmics ‘Sisters Are Doin’ It For Themselves’. Afterward, she broke into a rap performance.
She started her performance by singing, “All the ladies in the room, supporting and leading all here I presume”. Ariana continued, “Hong Chau; Dolly D; Kerry; and Carey with a C; Dame Emma, I’m so fond; Ana girl, you were great in Blonde; Danielle D, you broke my heart; Michelle, I’ve loved you from the start. Angela Bassett did the thing. Viola Davis my Woman King. Blanchett, Cate, you’re a genius; Jamie Lee, you are all of us”.

Twitter Reacted To The ‘Dreadful’ Performance Of The Actress
Post the performance, the internet was raging with comments about the dreadful rap performance of the actress. After the show, DeBose deleted her Twitter account due to the vitriol she received. BAFTAs’ producer Nick Bullen weighed in and came in support of the actress.
During an interview with Variety, he said that the hate she received was “unfair”. He claimed that everyone in the room loved the performance and they were cheering and clapping.
About the rap performance, he said, “That rap section in the middle, mentioning the women in the room, was because it’s been a great year for women in film, and we wanted to celebrate that. And here is a woman of color who is at the absolute top of her game. And she’s opening the BAFTAs with a song that said so much on so many levels”.
