Kanye West has had a stormy couple of weeks. It all started with his fashion statement during Paris Fashion Week. At the event, Kanye introduced his new line of Yeezy clothes which had the controversial ‘White Lives Matter’ imprinted on it. Later, he made certain insensitive comments about Jews which led to Ye’s ousting from Instagram and Twitter.
Despite his dwindling entrepreneurial career and social image, he had his hometown Atlanta, Georgia as a refuge. Back in 2021, Atlanta dedicated a day to Kanye West when he had a listening party at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium. However, now the then-councilwoman regrets doing so. Why exactly did Atlanta honor the rapper by dedicating a day to his name?

Why Does Atlanta Have A ‘Kanye West Day’?
The ‘Monster’ rapper has his roots in Atlanta. He was born in Atlanta, Georgia before moving to Chicago, Illinois. West was raised by his mother. His mother, Donda West died due to surgical complications in 2007. After 13 years of the tragic incident, Ye dedicated an entire album to his mother. It was 2021’s Kanye’s tenth studio album ‘Donda’.
The album was set to release on July 23rd, 2021, but got delayed by a month. Before releasing it to the global audience, Ye decided to have a listening party for fellow residents at his birthplace in Atlanta.
On July 22nd, 2021, West performed songs from the ‘Donda’ album for the 42,000 attendees at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Many prominent people attended the event including his estranged wife Kim Kardashian. However, there were two most significant events for the rapper that took place in the stadium. Amongst the 42,000 people, there were 5,000 staff, students, and faculty from various colleges including Morris Brown College. The first event that happened was that Morris Brown College conferred the Dr. Donda West Meritorious Service Award.
Ye’s mother, Donda, was an esteemed member of the College. She served at the HBCU for 20 years and she was a chairperson of its English department. Another significant event was that he was presented with a plaque on the occasion of the declaration of ‘Kanye West Day’ backstage at the stadium. Councilwoman Natalyn Archibong cited the reason to confer this honor on the ‘Jesus Walks’ rapper was to acknowledge his “substantial contribution to the arts” and his mother’s goodwill.

The Councilwoman Regrets Her Decision To Dedicate A Day In The Rapper’s Name
After the release of the album, Kanye basked in the glory of success and history-making. The ‘Donda’ album charted the No.1 position on Apple Music’s Top albums chart in 152 countries. But, things did not go down well for the ‘College Dropout’ rapper. He has embroiled himself in some extreme controversies hampering his own image. Recently, on a podcast, Kanye claimed that Minneapolis citizen George Floyd died due to the consumption of fentanyl and Derek Chauvin did not kill him.
Ye referred to a documentary by Candace Owens about the incident. George Floyd died when the above-mentioned officer forced his knees on his neck for 9½ minutes. He was convicted for the murder of Floyd. Back in his hometown Atlanta, Natalyn Archibong, the ex-councilwoman regrets being a part of the names who wanted a city’s day after the rapper.
She wants to “distance herself” after the rapper’s recent antics including the Anti-Semitic comments. Natalyn also said, “July 2021 proclamation did not envision that in 2022, the artist formerly known as Kanye West would boldly make such ugly and hurtful statements.”
