Why Did Christopher Nolan Cast Harry Styles In ‘Dunkirk’?

Harry Styles is all set to become one of the most iconic pop stars of contemporary times. With just three solo albums, Styles has accomplished a lot, including winning the ‘Album of the Year’ trophy at the Grammys. Along with his flourishing music career, he also dabbled in acting and debuted in Christopher Nolan’s World War II film ‘Dunkirk.’

Christopher Nolan sidetracked from his usual sci-fi films and forayed into period drama with ‘Dunkirk.’ The film was based on a real-life incident about British troops getting evacuated safely to Dunkirk. The film grossed $527 million at the box office and also starred musical heartthrob Harry Styles. Nolan cited that the singer’s “old-fashioned face” convinced him to cast him in the film.

It is like a dream come true to debut with Christopher Nolan in a war drama! Harry Styles was the chosen one to play Alex in Nolan’s ‘Dunkirk.’ But it is more fun to know how the director chose the ‘Fine Line’ singer for the role. During an interview with the Daily Mail, Christopher Nolan cited the reason he chose Harry for the film.

Nolan said, “He has an old-fashioned face … the kind of face that makes you believe he could have been alive in that period. Harry’s character’s very un-glamorous. It’s not a showboating role.”

In the same interview, Christopher Nolan talked about how Harry Styles bagged the role apart from qualifying for it with his facial features. He added, “Harry sent in a tape, and we liked the tape. And he joined the workshop, and that was that. It was a really old-fashioned process – and Harry’s features, ability and demeanor fitted right in.”

The ‘Inception’ director admired Harry Styles’ natural talents. Nolan admitted, “Harry shied away from being a ‘star’ in it. He’s a humble guy who didn’t want attention. He enjoyed the idea of not carrying it; that he was part of an ensemble. Like the soldiers they played, the actors were all in it together and supported each other very well.”

He continued, “Harry’s very talented. I’ve no idea whether he wants to pursue acting, but he’s a natural.”
