It has been five months since Johnny Depp won the defamation trial against his ex-wife Amber Heard. The six-weeks long trial that concluded in June 2022 created a lot of stir. The two sides formed supported either the actor or the actress. The ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ actor filed a $50 million defamation trial against the actress. It stemmed from the op-ed piece that she wrote in 2018 in the Washington Post alleging that she suffered domestic violence at the hands of Depp.
But, during the trial, the online audience did not keep quiet and like stars, sided with either Johnny Depp or Amber Heard. The ones who were on Johnny’s side did not leave a single chance to malign and tarnish the image of the ‘Aquaman’ actress. The virtual audience made mockery videos, parodies, and memes criticizing Amber for faking it. Many feminist groups and women sided with her against internet abusing and harassing her. Now, the groups are back supporting her.

During the jury deliberation, it was proved that Johnny Depp was innocent and he won the trial that took place in Fairfax County, Virginia. After a long trial, Depp won $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages. Heard got $2 million in compensatory damages and non punitive damages. She allegedly had to pay $10.35 million to her abuser.
Five months after the conclusion of the trial, around 130 women’s groups have come together to condemn the public shaming of the actress. The veteran political activist Gloria Steinem and filmmaker Amy Ziering also signed the petition. In order to protest against the public shaming she endured, an open letter was published.
The letter read, “Much of this harassment was fueled by disinformation, misogyny, biphobia, and a monetized social media environment where a woman’s allegations of domestic violence and sexual assault were mocked for entertainment.”
Amber accused Johnny of domestic violence and sexual assault as well. During her testimony holding back her tears, she said, “The harassment and the humiliation, the campaign against me that’s echoed every single day on social media, and now in front of cameras in the showroom — every single day I have to relive the trauma.”

The statement further read, “In our opinion, the Depp v. Heard verdict and continued discourse around it indicate a fundamental misunderstanding of intimate partner and sexual violence and how survivors respond to it. The damaging consequences of the spread of this information are incalculable.”
Johnny Depp is moving to court again to challenge the counterclaim verdict as “erroneous”. Amber was awarded $2 million in compensatory damage. As per his legal team, the actor should not be held accountable for the statements made by his attorney, Adam Waldman.
The statement continued, “We have grave concerns about the rising misuse of defamation suits to threaten and silence survivors.
In conclusion, it said, “We condemn the public shaming of Amber Heard and join in support of her. We support the ability of all to report intimate partner and sexual violence free of harassment and intimidation.”
