Why Julia Roberts Ran Away With Kiefer Sutherland’s Best Friend 3 Days Before Their Wedding

Julia Roberts has been crowned as one of ‘America’s sweethearts’. It’s because of her lively personality, charming behavior, and a hearty smile which is reportedly insured for $30 million. But there is one man who probably can’t stand the sight of her despite once having been in love with her and wanting her to be his wife. It’s ‘24‘ actor Kiefer Sutherland. However, their wedding ceremony never happened, and the drama surrounding it was very much like a movie.

Being in a high-profile relationship can take a toll on couples. Many such celebrity pairs have broken up or called off weddings due to the media glare. But Julia Roberts actually ran way to Ireland before her wedding, to Sutherland, that too with his best friend. So, what went wrong between the to-be bride and groom?

Julia Roberts and Kiefer Sutherland began dating in 1990 after meeting on the set of ‘Flatliners’. They felt a connection and wanted to make things official pretty soon. They got engaged in August of the same year and were supposed to get married on June 14, 1991.

The ceremony that the couple had planned was going to be grand and fun, that too on a sound stage. Of course, Hollywood weddings have to have that ‘It’ factor. The venue was Twentieth Century Fox studio with the perfect decor of a pastoral garden. About 150 guests were going to witness Julia and Kiefer exchange vows. However, the ‘Pretty Woman‘ actress wasn’t ready for the altar. A heartbroken Sutherland couldn’t even live in the home he shared with Roberts afterward. Suffice to say, their relationship hit a very sour note which was beyond repair.

    Jason Patric and Julia Roberts

Amid mass hysteria over Julia Roberts and Kiefer Sutherland’s break up, fans wondered if wedding jitters played the culprit. However, it was revealed that Roberts called off their engagement just three days before the wedding and ran away to Ireland. What created a frenzy was her traveling partner, a man named Jason Patric, who was Sutherland’s co-star in ‘Lost Boys‘, but more importantly, the two men had been best friends for years.

On the day Julia took off, Sutherland moved out of their happy abode in which they had intended to share a life together. He was dejected and humiliated as he contemplated his life in a new residence.

Sutherland allegedly called Patric a “snake” and wanted to hurt him. He said, “When I get hold of Jason I am going to tear him limb from limb. That snake pretended to be my best friend and all the time he was really after my girl.”

Then the question remained on why Roberts betrayed Sutherland. But the betrayal may have come the other way around. Rumors arose that he had cheated on her with an exotic dancer named Amanda Rice, but Sutherland strongly denied the accusations.

After the breakup, Patric and Roberts had a brief romance. They also ended up splitting up about a year after the infamous failed wedding. Julia went on to marry Danny Moder and has three kids. On the other hand, Sutherland had two marriages that didn’t work out. He is now living a good life with his partner Cindy Vela and daughter Sarah Sutherland.
