Why Peter Dinklage Is Right For Defending Infamously Divisive ‘Game Of Thrones’ Finale

It’s been 5 years since ‘Game of Thrones‘ aired its controversial finale, and fans still can’t seem to get over it. With intense debate about how ‘The Iron Throne‘ wrapped up one of the most beloved shows in TV history, it’s no surprise that many of the cast members, including Peter Dinklage, have had to address the ongoing outrage.

For a show that attracted millions of viewers and became a cultural phenomenon, the last episode was bound to ruffle some feathers. Whether it was Daenerys Targaryen’s abrupt demise or Bran Stark becoming king, some moments didn’t sit well with viewers. Here’s what Dinklage said about it.

In a recent interview, Peter Dinklage once again voiced his support for the finale, as per Screen Rant. “Again, just my opinion. I like the finale! You don’t have to agree with me. How about if I said like, ‘Yeah, I agree. I hated the finale. The whole last season was horrible’? I mean, that would sit much worse than if I said I loved it, which I did, which I did.”

He raises a good point, doesn’t he? Whether you love it or hate it, the fact that people are still passionately discussing the ‘Game of Thrones‘ finale means that the show left a lasting impact.

Dinklage continued, “I can’t speak for anybody else’s opinion, and that’s what makes what we do fun, because everybody does have a difference of opinion and everybody gets to write about it and chat about it and drink over it and argue about it. It’s great.”

I mean, I think it means you’re doing something right. It’s like an old Irish way of looking at the world. There’s something wrong if everything’s OK,” the actor said.

Why The Finale Works For Peter Dinklage

Honestly, the finale of ‘Game of Thrones‘ wasn’t perfect. But it doesn’t have to be. Peter Dinklage’s argument is based on the show’s commitment to shocking its audience. It was never about making everyone happy. The ending reflected that.

Daenerys Targaryen, one of the series’ most complex characters, had a grand but tragic downfall. Was it rushed? Sure. But was her fate unexpected? Not really. After burning King’s Landing, her death was inevitable. Dinklage’s right here – her tragic end was, in many ways, the only way her arc could close.

And then there’s Bran Stark, the boy who became the Three-Eyed Raven, somehow ending up as King of Westeros. But think about it: Bran represents breaking away from the old system of power-hungry rulers. He doesn’t crave power. He’s a passive figure who can literally “see” the mistakes of the past and learn from them.

While Bran’s ascension left some scratching their heads, it’s the fates of the other Starks that truly made the finale memorable. Arya Stark, after an epic journey of self-discovery, sets off to explore uncharted lands.

Sansa Stark finally finds the power she deserves as Queen in the North, and Jon Snow, who always struggled with his identity, returns to the North where he belongs. As Dinklage once said, “I loved it.”

For much of the later seasons, Tyrion’s impact felt reduced. But in ‘The Iron Throne,’ Tyrion gets a strong final moment. He pushes for Bran to be made king and helps Jon come to terms with killing Daenerys.

Tyrion returning as Hand of the King, the role he excelled at back in season two, is a perfect full-circle moment. Tyrion’s not getting a triumphant end, but one grounded in the realism that ‘Game of Thrones‘ has always embraced.

In the end, Peter Dinklage’s defense of ‘The Iron Throne‘ reflects his unique perspective as an actor and a fan of the show. While many fans still feel the sting of the finale, his argument is simple. But the emotional impact of the episode proves ‘Game of Thrones‘ was doing something right.
