‘Game of Thrones’ Showrunners Regret Not Bringing Back This Character To The Show

Game Of Thrones‘ has gone down in history as one of the greatest fantasy shows ever made, with thousands of fans spread worldwide. Though it has had its fair share of groundbreaking moments, many believe that the show could have done better, especially with the last season. But that’s what ‘Game of Thrones’ is known for – doing what the audience would never expect.

Based on the novels by George R.R. Martin, the show has David Benioff and Dan Weiss as the masterminds. David Benioff and Dan Weiss were speaking during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter when they spilled the beans on a small regret they still hold. Though they are known for their stoic silence on their thoughts on ‘Game of Thrones’, they openly revealed what they really wish they had done differently.

The Emmy-winning duo was discussing their upcoming Netflix sci-fi drama ‘3 Body Problem’, when they to a missed opportunity with a certain character they now think had great potential. And it is not something the viewers would even remotely expect.

One thing I know I wish we could have done is there’s the character Mord the Jailer,” Benioff said. “It was a mistake not bringing Mord the Jailer back into it,” Weiss added. “We always talked about doing it,” he said.

And we had the scene for it,” said Benioff. “There’s a scene set in a tavern …”

Was it Brienne or The Hound?” Weiss interrupted. “But we realized too late that Mord could have owned the tavern. We could have had that actor in the background acting exactly the way he did as a jailer, except now as a small business owner. It was just such an obvious, no-brainer, day-after idea,” he added.

Mord’s character was played by Ciaran Bermingham on the show. The character was a guard overseeing the Sky Cells at the Eyrie, where Tyrion Lannister’s character played by Peter Dinklage was highly tortured. Tyrion was held captive at Sky Cells for a long time before he sought help from Mord.

Mord turns out to be the saving grace that was essential for Tyrion’s iconic character to survive. It of course came at a cost for Tyrion. The Lannister bribed Mord for help and escaped. But before leaving, he tossed Mord a sack of gold coins because, well, “A Lannister always pays his debts.”

Though it never happened, the show creators have left the fans wondering what Mord would have seemed like after transitioning from a thuggish jailer to a savvy small-business owner. What perhaps creates more curiosity is the contribution his character might have made to the story arc. Unfortunately, it is now only left to the viewer’s imagination to figure it out.
