Jon Bernthal‘s return as Frank Castle in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is one of the most exciting developments surrounding the next Spider-Man movie. However, reports say that Bernthal wasn’t just interested in reviving the Punisher for a cameo or to become another light-hearted superhero.
Jon Bernthal Wanted The Punisher To Stay Authentic
The actor reportedly demanded that some parts of Frank Castle be protected before he would return. That makes sense. Bernthal’s Punisher was a success because he didn’t feel like a traditional superhero. He was cruel, injured, and filled with sorrow.

It was vital to Bernthal’s ability to maintain that identity. One thing that was mentioned as a priority was maintaining Frank’s edge. Despite being a Spider-Man film, Bernthal didn’t want Marvel to sanitize Castle or turn him into a generic hero who suddenly cracks jokes alongside Peter Parker.
Military authenticity was another major consideration. Bernthal has worked closely with military advisors in the past to ensure that his portrayal is grounded, and this time it seems that his longtime military advisor, Colton Hill, made an appearance.
That attention to detail might make Frank’s action scenes quite different from Peter’s acrobatic fighting style. Bernthal was also given creative license by Marvel and director Destin Daniel Cretton, allowing him to improvise and contribute to Frank’s dialogue and emotional moments.
Frank Castle Could Become Peter Parker’s Darkest Warning
The most intriguing thing is that maybe Frank has a greater intent in Peter’s story. The Punisher isn’t just another strong character thrown into the film; he could represent a potential future for Peter if grief, anger, and isolation consume him.

Peter and Frank both have suffered loss, and they both react to it in different ways. Peter takes responsibility and makes an effort to save lives while not being overwhelmed by his suffering. Frank embraces pain as his identity.
The difference might make their relationship surprisingly emotional. Bernthal has also worked with Holland before, on the 2015 film ‘Pilgrimage’, and has a real friendship with him. So Marvel didn’t simply bring back the Punisher. It may be giving Bernthal the freedom to make sure Frank Castle still feels like Frank Castle.
