The Tesseract is one of the MCU’s most crucial items, but something unsettling follows everyone who has interacted with it. The Space Stone was eventually discovered in the Cosmic Cube, which was one of the most powerful artifacts in existence.
However, nearly all of the big characters who had used or got very close to it were met with a harsh end. Perhaps it’s not a curse. But, truthfully, it’s difficult to miss the pattern.
From Loki to Red Skull, the Tesseract Left Destruction Behind
Loki’s interaction with the Tesseract is likely the most memorable. It was used by him in ‘The Avengers’ during his invasion of Earth and was lost by him in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, where he died at the hands of Thanos. There’s Red Skull, who tried to use the Tesseract in ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’.

Then he was taken to Vormir and was sentenced to be the keeper of the Soul Stone. And then there is Thanos himself. The Mad Titan spent many years looking for the Infinity Stones, finding the Tesseract and finally using the Space Stone to complete his task.
However, the win was short-lived. After the Snap, Thor eventually slew him with Stormbreaker, and the later version of Thanos was eventually beheaded by the Avengers.
Tony Stark’s Final Connection To The Stones
Tony Stark’s fate makes the pattern even more tragic. He wasn’t the first owner of the Tesseract, but he was one of the individuals most directly involved with the Infinity Stones. He used all six Stones through his own gauntlet to wipe out Thanos and his army in ‘Avengers: Endgame’.
The power was too much for his body. Tony won the battle, but died moments later, giving his life to save the universe. There was no evil in the Tesseract itself. It was just an inexplicable source of energy. Still, its history leaves behind one eerie thought: in the MCU, touching the power of the cosmos rarely ends well.
