“The Feedback Has Drug-Like Qualities”: ‘Game Of Thrones’ Creators Open Up About Show’s Polarizing Ending

Benioff and Weiss, the creators of last decade’s most-watched show ‘Game of Thrones finally made a statement on the disappointing ending of Westeroes’ fate. The screenplay is based on the book series ‘Song of Ice and Fire’ which won the 1997 Locus Award and was nominated for many. George R.R. Martin’s snow and dragon-filled tale of Westeros’ seven noble houses made its debut on HBO on 17 April 2011.

The start of a decade was also the start of an age of the most anticipated question of the year 2019 when the finale aired. Who will win the game? And we did get the answer, it’s just the answer did not satisfy every fan. The epic fantasy series is widely regarded as the fantasy successor to ‘Lord of the Rings’, which dominated the world’s cultural landscape and failed to pop the final cherry on the top.

In a long-awaited disclosure, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the masterminds of the cultural hit ‘Game of Thrones,’ opened up about the strong response following the show’s notorious climax, nearly five years after it ended.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Benioff and Weiss shed light on the aftermath, addressing the fiery reactions to the show’s conclusion. Benioff shared, “You always hope everyone’s going to love anything you do and it would’ve been great if 100% of people loved it, but they didn’t.”

Yes, they didn’t. Viewers were so dissatisfied with the finale that they began a petition headed “Remake Game of Thrones Season 8 with competent writers.” Unlike other similar campaigns that gain a little traction before dying out, this one keeps on accumulating signatures and now stands at 1.86 million.

Weiss gave insight into the emotional toll of public opinion, stating, “Even extremely positive feedback makes you feel strange, teeth-grinding, and on edge. The feedback has drug-like qualities.” The creators revealed that disconnecting from online criticism resulted in a considerable drop in stress levels, underscoring the importance of virtual input in their lives.

Looking for a positive note amidst the news is that ‘House of the Dragon’ successfully restored faith in the Westeros world. The second season of the ‘Game Of Thrones’ prequel is to premiere later this year. Simultaneously, Benioff and Weiss have collaborated on a new, epic Netflix series, indicating their continuous dedication to telling fascinating stories. The internet will always have opinions and it is particularly scary when it’s through a screen.

Weiss said, “There’s an underlying decency when people acknowledge you as a person and vice versa. There’s something that happens in the transition from human interaction to online that pushes things in a specifically aggro direction.”
