The Spiderman movies are always heartwarming. Unlike the other superhero movies, the ones with the Spidey are more humane and romantic. Be it Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, or Tom Holland, they have rendered their characters so perfectly that they stay in fans’ minds. The spice factor to these Marvel movies is the romantic subplots that put the leads in a dilemma. But it is these same subplots that have gone on to make some of the most remarkable scenes in movie history.
In 2002, there was a kiss scene that set fire to the hearts of millions of cinema fans. We are talking about the upside-down smooch between Spiderman (Tobey Maguire) and his girlfriend Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst), after he saves her from being attacked in the New York City alley. With the rain adding a more romantic dimension to the scene, it’s totally memorable. But it seems Maguire hated it.

Why Tobey Maguire Hated Spider-Man Kiss Scene?
The kiss scene was much unpleasant for the actor. There were so many reasons. His upside-down position, the heavy rain, and the fact that he was suffocated as Dunst rolled down the mask. Tobey Maguire recounted the kiss scene to Parade in 2007, “I was hanging upside down, it was really late at night, it was raining, and the whole time I had rainwater running up my nose. Then, when Kirsten rolled back the wet mask, she cut off the air completely.” He also recounted to The Desert News how difficult the scene must have been to Kirsten as he “was gasping for breath out of the corner of Kirsten’s mouth“. Thus, was created the iconic kiss scene that went on to win the MTV Movie Award for The Best Kiss in 2003.

Director Sam Raimi’s The Iconic Kiss Scene?
The director, Sam Raimi did understand the uneasiness faced by the actors. “If you’re in the rain, you’re freezing your buns off. But we would have to get out there, get in position, get the rain going, and then we would have to lift Tobey up on the wire, upside down in the position you saw him in the movie.”, Raimi explained how difficult it was to set up the whole scene. He could see that the actors were shivering in the chill rain but never complained. Maguire was ‘semi- drowning‘, Raimi recounted to Rotten Tomatoes the making of the scene.
Spider-Man was the first film to reach $100 million in a single weekend back in 2002. It is still a much-loved film.
