As Ridley Scott returns to the helm for ‘Gladiator II,’ the excitement surrounding the sequel to his Oscar-winning 2000 film is palpable. The original ‘Gladiator‘ not only won 5 Academy Awards but also immortalized Russell Crowe as the valiant Maximus.
With the sequel set to introduce a new chapter in ancient Rome, fans can’t help but wonder how it will measure up to its predecessor. However, one glaring question remains – why isn’t Crowe involved in this new saga?
Ridley Scott On Why He Didn’t Consult Russell Crowe
Fans were expecting for a dream sequence or flashback where Maximus might reappear despite his tragic end in the first movie. However, director Ridley Scott confirmed that ‘The Pope’s Exorcist‘ actor won’t be part of the sequel.
In an interview with Empire magazine, Ridley Scott candidly discussed the decision not to involve Russell Crowe in ‘Gladiator II.’ Scott admitted that constructing a compelling storyline for the sequel was no easy task.
“The plot, frankly, was right under our noses. I think it was so close under our noses that we thought it was too simple,” he shared.

But that doesn’t mean Scott harbors any ill will towards Crowe. “I think he’s still one of the best actors in the world, and I think we have a good relationship. I hope we do,” Scott remarked.
He even added a touch of humor. He said, “As long as he doesn’t start bitching about how he wasn’t consulted, why would I? He’s dead!“
