“Worst Thing Ever”: What Irks Emily Blunt In A Script?

What if this Emily did not make it to Paris, she is creating ripples in Hollywood. Emily Blunt is indisputably a worthy and the most non-problematic actress in the industry. She has been called the ‘Meryl Streep of our generation.’ Blunt proved her mettle when she played Disney’s favorite nanny in ‘Mary Poppins Returns’. But, the actress is starring in a Western Drama on BBC titled ‘The English’.

The story is set in the late 19th century when Europeans entered the land beyond the Atlantic acquiring lands of the Natives forcefully, displacing and harassing them. Emily Blunt is playing Lady Cornelia Locke in the six-part epic on BBC Two. The actress is not leading the project, but for the series, she also donned the hat of a producer. During her promotional interviews, the actress revealed what puts her off when she reads a script.

‘The ‘Devil Wears Prada’ actress has portrayed women in different shades of gender. She has played a vulnerable one, a fierce woman, and someone who is understanding the nuances of her sexuality in ‘My Summer of Love’. Now, she is leading the pack in the new Western drama ‘The English’ streaming on Prime Video. Though she loved playing the guile, buoyant Cornelia Locke, she hates when these three words are imprinted on a script.

Emily said, “I love a character with a secret. And I loved Cornelia’s buoyancy, her hopefulness, her guilelessness. It’s the worst thing ever when you open a script and read the words: ‘strong female lead’. That makes me roll my eyes – I’m already out. I’m bored.”

Blunt continued talking about why she hates to play such roles and what is distinct about Cornelia. “Those roles are written as incredibly stoic, you spend the whole time acting tough and saying tough things. Cornelia is more surprising than that. She’s innocent without being naive and that makes her a force to be reckoned with. She startles Eli out of his silence and their differences become irrelevant because they need each other to survive. I thought that was very cool.”

Along with starring in her first Western drama, Blunt was also producing for the first time. Her husband John Krasinski donned the producer’s hat with ‘A Quiet Place’. It was no surprise that ‘The Office’ star encouraged her to take on a project where she is also working in the capacity of a producer.

Emily admitted that she has worked as a producer but did not ask for the credits. However, she said that she was intimately involved in the project and finally took the call to be a producer in the fullest manner.

She said, “I adore the development of stuff. I love post-production and love all of it. I just haven’t really asked for the role before, I guess. This came along as a pilot, and so, I signed on to it as a pilot. It seemed that I was going to be along for the ride from its most embryonic phases.” Blunt, because it is her first Western project and her first project as a producer, feels closest to it.

The actress said, “This is a project that might feel the closest to me. This is something that I am so proud of it and I’m so intimately involved with.”
