That secrecy may be intentional, especially if Matt Hagen’s transformation into the iconic shape-shifting villain is as disturbing as the latest promotional artwork suggests.
The new ‘Clayface’ variant covers don’t reveal the movie’s entire story, but they offer an intriguing glimpse at the grotesque creature audiences could soon see on the big screen.
DC’s New ‘Clayface’ Looks Like A Nightmare
Several DC comics scheduled for October are receiving special ‘Clayface’ movie variant covers from major artists. While the artwork isn’t necessarily a direct representation of the film, some of the designs lean heavily into Clayface’s monstrous appearance.

The biggest opportunity for ‘Clayface‘ isn’t simply creating another superhero origin story. It’s making audiences uncomfortable. Watching Matt gradually lose control of his physical form could give the movie a psychological edge that separates it from the usual DC formula.

The movie also arrives at an interesting time for the DCU. ‘Creature Commandos‘ has already introduced Clayface, but the upcoming film will explore his origin and potentially give audiences their first extended look at how Matt Hagen becomes the creature everyone knows.
DC is even giving the character additional attention in the comics, with October releases celebrating his twisted history. Hopefully, though, the movie doesn’t play it too safe. ‘Clayface’ is literally a man whose body becomes a living, shape-shifting sludge. If DC isn’t willing to make that idea a little horrifying, then what’s the point?
