Tom Holland’s future as Spider-Man may still have plenty of chapters left, but fans are already imagining what could happen after he eventually hangs up the web-shooters. One particularly fun possibility is Holland making the jump from Marvel to DC, and James Gunn’s recent response has done little to completely shut that idea down.

Could Holland Become A DC Hero?

A fan asked Gunn whether Holland could have a future DCU role, suggesting characters including Beast Boy, Kid Flash, Aqualad, Speedy, Robin, Kyle Rayner, Brainiac 5 and Mon-El. Gunn’s response was playful rather than definitive: “Not sure 30-year-old Tom wants to follow up Spider-Man with Aqualad.”

It was clearly a joke about Holland’s age and the youthful nature of several of those characters, but fans immediately noticed what Gunn didn’t say. He didn’t rule out Holland appearing in the DCU altogether. And there are certainly plenty of possibilities if Holland ever decides to make the jump.

Some of the fan suggestions are probably too young for the actor at this stage of his career. Holland first appeared as Spider-Man back in 2016, meaning he has now spent roughly a decade playing Peter Parker. That makes characters such as Kid Flash or Beast Boy feel like strange long-term choices.

Holland could physically pull them off, sure, but it would be a little odd watching him go from Spider-Man to another character designed primarily around being the younger member of a superhero team. A more mature role could make considerably more sense.

Nightwing, Kyle Rayner, or Something Unexpected?

One obvious fan-favorite possibility is Nightwing, particularly because Holland has already demonstrated that he can balance youthful energy with a more experienced superhero persona. Kyle Rayner could also be an interesting choice, while a completely unexpected DC character might ultimately suit him best.

For now, Gunn’s comment isn’t confirmation of anything. There is no indication that Holland is being considered for a specific DCU role. Still, the door doesn’t appear to be firmly closed. And honestly, after watching Holland spend years swinging through New York, the idea of him eventually showing up in the DCU is pretty fun to think about.
