James Gunn’s DCU may be quietly moving away from the version of The Flash that fans have known for decades. The Flash mantle has been one of DC’s most important suits of armor. However, recent developments suggest the new universe may care more about the legacy of the Flash mantle than about making Barry its central speedster.
Barry Allen’s Flash Future Looks Increasingly Uncertain
‘Lanterns’ gave an interesting hint. The series establishes Hal Jordan as an experienced hero mentoring John Stewart, creating a clear generational transition. If the DCU follows the same path, Barry Allen may well be an established hero whose time will pass before a younger hero comes along.

It would be a big shift for the long-time fans. Barry is not just a speedster; he’s one of the Justice League’s most iconic characters. It would be odd to see him sidelined by the DCU, given that his counterpart in the previous universe did make the character a big part of the show.
Wally West Can Carry The Flash Legacy
The largest hint is from ‘Creature Commandos’. Circe’s vision of the future saw a lineup of Justice League members that included Wally West as The Flash, instead of Barry Allen. A vision of the future doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a confirmation. However, it’s certainly an interesting option for the DCU.

Wally assuming control could also be a sign of the direction that James Gunn seems to be going. The new DCU isn’t just a remake of the old DCEU. Instead, it appears to be interested in established heroes and characters who are inheriting the legacy of previous generations.
Batman can provide a similar option. The Brave and the Bold will feature Damian Wayne as Bruce Wayne’s son and Robin. This will immediately thrust a younger generation into the heart of Batman’s story. The same thing may happen with The Flash in the future.
However, of course, Barry Allen is not confirmed to be missing. The character may also reappear later, as a more mature hero who turns into a mentor. There are also numerous ways for Barry to get into the DCU. But if Wally West is going to be the universe’s main Flash, Barry’s part may be a lot smaller than what fans would like to see.
Truthfully, that’s not a bad thing at all. There’s always been more to the Flash mantle than a single person. Barry Allen leaving the role might actually make the Flash legacy feel larger, not smaller, for the DCU.
