“It Got Torn To Shreds”: James Gunn Confirms Henry Cavill’s Superman Suit Was Destroyed During Auditions For New DCU Movie

Henry Cavill’s iconic Superman suit, a symbol of strength and heroism for countless DC fans, has met an unexpected and somewhat dramatic end. DCU head James Gunn made a shocking revelation about the suit’s fate. 

Additionally, he confirmed that the suit was damaged during the audition process for the upcoming DC Universe ‘Superman’ film. The world will witness the new suit when  ‘Superman’ hits theaters on July 11, 2025.

The revelation came after a fan asked James Gunn questions regarding rumors of actor Tom Brittney damaging the costume during auditions. James Gunn responded on Threads by verifying the story, noting, “Tom messed it up and then Corenswet came in and he was way too tall so it just got torn to shreds.”

Gunn also shared his appreciation for Tom despite the mishap, describing him as “incredibly talented” and one of his favorite actors. He also admitted that the suit was already in a fragile state, saying, “It was an original that wasn’t in the best shape to begin with.

The Superman suit, synonymous with Cavill’s tenure as the Man of Steel, held significant sentimental value for fans. Watching it become a casualty of the casting process was unexpected. However, it also symbolizes a new era of Superman in a more dramatic way than fans expected.

The search for the new Superman was intense, with actors like Tom Brittney and David Corenswet donning the suit to capture the essence of Clark Kent. While Brittney’s audition was memorable for the wardrobe mishap, it was Corenswet who ultimately replaced Henry Cavill.

James Gunn has been full of praise for Corenswet. He described him as “the movie star that everyone just dreams he could possibly be.” Speaking at New York Comic Con, Gunn further gushed over Corenswet’s talents. “Dramatically, comedically, he’s the best physical action star I’ve probably ever worked with. He’s an amazing actor.” he stated.

Gunn also expressed confidence that Rachel Brosnahan, who will play Lois Lane, will win audiences over. The director’s excitement suggests a dynamic duo that could redefine the iconic Superman-Lois pairing. Moreover, the upcoming Superman film is set to be the DCU’s first live-action release under Gunn’s vision.

Additionally, it boasts an impressive cast. Alongside Corenswet and Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult is set to play Lex Luthor. Fans can also look forward to Frank Grillo reprising his role as Rick Flag Sr., bridging the new film with the animated ‘Creature Commandos’ series and ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2.
