James Gunn Asserts Old DCEU’s Huge Impact On New DCU, Says Past Events Would Become Canon

The DC Universe is undergoing a major reboot with the launch of โ€˜Gods and Monstersโ€™ and boss James Gunn has come forth to clear some popular misconceptions. While this new slate of films and series will largely serve as a fresh start, there will be some connections to the previous DCEU continuity.

One such connection is the return of Peacemaker in his own spin-off series. Despite the reboot, โ€˜Peacemakerโ€™ Season 2 will feature John Cena and other cast members from the original HBO Max show. This suggests that certain elements from the DCEU will be incorporated into the new DCU. Here’s what Gunn has to say about it.

The head of DC Studios, James Gunn, explained how the new DCU will deal with these references. “We learn that other things that have happened in the past in other media have still happened,” Gunn said at New York Comic Con. “There are references to things that happened in the past. And those references then become canon in the DCU because we mention them,” he added.

This means that while the new DCU will be largely self-contained, it will not stop acknowledging and referencing certain events from the DCEU. This approach allows for a sense of continuity. Moreover, it also provides a fresh start for the franchise. Balancing the new with the old can be a delicate task.

However, the decision to bring back โ€˜Peacemakerโ€™ is a smart one. The character was a fan favorite in โ€˜The Suicide Squadโ€™, and his own series was a critical and commercial success. Moreover, a new season for the show has been long overdue.ย

James Gunn’s recent comments about the DCU’s continuity also sparked speculation about the future of the franchise. Gunn clarified that while the new DCU will be largely self-contained, it will also incorporate elements from the previous DCEU.

However, it appears that the larger overarching story of the DCU will be significantly different from its predecessor. Gunn has indicated that connections to prior DCEU events will be limited and made clear early on. This suggests that the new DCU will have a fresh start.

Moreover, fans can expect new characters to be introduced. While the core cast of the Justice League from the DCEU will not be returning, there is a possibility that other characters from that universe may make appearances in the new DCU.ย

For example, characters like Aquaman, Shazam, and Wonder Woman could potentially be reintroduced in a way that fits the new continuity just like David Corenswet’s Superman. Moreover, the extent to which the DCEU will influence the new DCU remains to be seen. However, Gunn’s comments suggest that while there will be some connections to the past, the focus will be on creating a new universe.
