James Gunn isn’t ready to leave Harley Quinn behind in the new DC Universe, but whether Margot Robbie wants to return as the fan-favorite antihero remains uncertain. The DC Studios co-CEO has made it clear that he loves Robbie’s portrayal and would do whatever it takes to bring her back.
James Gunn Isn’t Sure Margot Robbie Wants to Play Harley Quinn Again

While on The Suicide Squad: Is It Canon? The Official Podcast, Gunn discussed which elements of his 2021 film remain part of the rebooted DCU. While he believes most of the movie’s events still count, Harley’s future is one detail he hasn’t completely figured out.

“I’d say, we have one small asterisk, which is: what exactly is the future of Harley Quinn?” Gunn said. “I want to be given a little leeway with this by the fans because I’m not sure exactly how that’s going to manifest itself.” That uncertainty doesn’t mean Gunn is ready to recast the character.
It suggests that Harley’s place in the new universe depends partly on Robbie’s willingness to revisit a role she has played across three DC movies.
Harley Quinn Will Almost Certainly Return To The DCU

Gunn has nothing but praise for Robbie’s performance, describing the actress enthusiastically while admitting that her return isn’t guaranteed. “She’s just so crazy. I love her as Harley. I don’t know if she wants to play Harley again. She may be over that,” Gunn explained.

Robbie first portrayed Harley Quinn in David Ayer’s ‘Suicide Squad’, before reprising the role in ‘Birds of Prey’ and Gunn’s ‘The Suicide Squad’. Since then, her career has reached another level, particularly following the enormous success of ‘Barbie’.
It’s easy to understand why Gunn might be unsure about her availability. Robbie has become a major Hollywood star with numerous projects competing for her attention. Still, her absence from the DCU would leave some enormous shoes to fill.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding Robbie, Gunn has indicated that Harley Quinn will almost certainly remain part of the DCU’s future. The bigger question is how that return will happen and whether Robbie will be the one wearing the iconic red-and-black outfit.
