James Gunn has a message for DC fans who believe the new DC Universe needs to build toward a massive crossover event: individual movies should be allowed to stand on their own.

The DC Studios co-head recently addressed criticism about the direction of the franchise on Threads. He defended his approach to building a shared universe without making every project feel like another piece of a much bigger puzzle.

For Gunn, a connected universe should create opportunities for different stories rather than force every character to serve the same overarching narrative. “I dislike the idea that individual stories aren’t meaningful unless they lead to something else,” Gunn wrote.

He believes that audiences should be able to enter the DCU at different points and enjoy the stories being told. While some fans are eager to see how these characters eventually come together, Gunn appears determined not to let crossover speculation overshadow the films themselves.

To explain his vision, Gunn pointed toward ‘Star Wars’, which has spent decades exploring different characters, timelines, and corners of its fictional universe across movies, television, games, and books. He described the DCU as an alternate universe where filmmakers can tell stories without constantly worrying about how they connect to everything else.

Gunn clarified that the DCU will still have interconnected storylines. The upcoming ‘Man of Tomorrow’, for instance, continues the story established in ‘Superman’. However, that larger narrative shouldn’t diminish projects with their own identities.

As Gunn explained, he wants audiences to watch ‘Clayface’ because it works as a horror film, not simply because the character might appear in another DCU project years later. The film is centred on Batman’s shape-shifting adversary rather than the Dark Knight himself.

Its horror-focused approach allows the DCU to explore a different corner of the comic-book world without following the traditional superhero blockbuster formula. Gunn’s argument challenges the idea that every franchise installment must advance a grand plan.

A shared universe can benefit from long-term storytelling, but it also needs memorable individual films. If the DCU succeeds, perhaps fans won’t need to ask what every movie is building toward. According to Gunn, a great story should be enough.
