‘Supergirl’ marks a definite step for the DC Universe towards something more daring and a little more unpredictable. Although the movie is supposed to bring a new iteration of Kara Zor-El, the introduction of Jason Momoa as Lobo is what is bringing an additional element of chaos that fans were unaware of.
And, judging by the recent CinemaCon footage, this film has no interest in playing it safe.
‘Supergirl’s First Footage Reveals A Flawed, Fierce Cosmic Hero

The extended footage puts Milly Alcock’s Supergirl right in the middle of a tense, offbeat space journey. It begins fairly confined, with a weird ship, a blend of alien travelers, and an uncomfortable silence, but soon gets out of control as tech pirates invade the scene. What ensues is not a normal superhero sequence but a disheveled survival scramble.

Kara struggles, falls, and adjusts. She is not flawlessly in control, and that is what makes it interesting. At some point, she is literally pulled into space in the middle of the suit-up, and is floating in silence until her powers eventually come into effect. It is the type of scene that makes it clear that this version of Supergirl is still trying to figure herself out.
‘Supergirl’s Cosmic Chaos Just Got Better With Jason Momoa’s Lobo

Then there’s Lobo. The very fact that Momoa was cast in the movie is already an indication of a tonal shift. However, his remarks at the event make it even more apparent that DC is not afraid to have a little fun with its own history.

When asked how Lobo would interact with his former role as Aquaman, he did not envision a violent confrontation, but rather the two sharing a few hundred beers together.
“I think they’d take one look at each other and have a few hundred beers and be like, ‘I like this guy.’” It is a humorous response, yet it conveys a message. The DCU under James Gunn is not merely creating a connected universe, but one that can breathe, make jokes, and lean into character dynamics without being too serious about it.
