James Gunn’s ‘Superman’ Avoids A Major DCU Misstep And It Looks Like A Great Sign For The Franchise’s Future

James Gunn has a clear vision for Superman in the new DC Universe, and it’s already setting the stage for a much-needed course correction. While Henry Cavill brought undeniable presence and strength to the role in ‘Man of Steel’, the film made some unpopular decisions.

Its choice to have Superman kill General Zod left many longtime fans conflicted. Now, with ‘Superman’ (2025) on the horizon and David Corenswet as the hero, James Gunn is promising a version of the character that feels truer to his comic book roots.

Why ‘Man of Steel’ Ending Left Fans Divided

Let’s be honest, ‘Man of Steel’ wasn’t a bad movie. In fact, it had some genuinely great moments. Zack Snyder undoubtedly brought a unique aesthetic to Superman’s mythos. But where it really stumbled was in a pivotal moment that changed how many saw the character: Superman snapping Zod’s neck.

For many fans, this was a hard pill to swallow. Superman is supposed to be the moral compass of the DC Universe. He’s the guy who, no matter the cost, always finds another way. The choice to have him kill, especially in the very first movie of a new cinematic universe, was a bold one. Moreover, it clashed hard with the essence of who Superman is supposed to be.

Sure, the idea was that this version of Superman was still finding himself. Snyder intended a longer arc where Clark grows into the hopeful symbol we all know. But the problem is, that arc never fully came to fruition. The darker tone remained, and fans were left with a Superman who was estranged from his comic book roots.

Superman’s refusal to kill is more than a personal choice. Additionally, it separates him from the very villains he fights. He chooses to hold back, to believe in redemption, and to value every life, even when it seems impossible. That restraint defines his heroism. So, when ‘Man of Steel’ crossed that line, it turned Superman into just another powerful guy.

From the moment David Corenswet was cast there were a lot of fan opinions. However, there was also a lot of optimism surrounding this reboot. Now, James Gunn has made it clear: this Superman will be different. In a recent interview, Gunn spoke very highly of Corenswet’s Superman.

He believes the sanctity of life is of the utmost importance. No matter what, you do not let anyone die, ever.” That one quote says it all. This Superman is guided by empathy. He values life above all else, and he doesn’t take shortcuts. That’s exactly the kind of hero we know.

You can already feel the tonal shift. From what we’ve seen in the trailers and promotional material, Corenswet’s Clark Kent looks like he actually enjoys being Superman. This isn’t a Superman weighed down by trauma and darkness, it’s one who inspires. Additionally, the DCU doesn’t have to shy away from mature violent content to make Superman work.

Gunn is balancing his universe brilliantly. He’s giving fans the best of both worlds. So now, Corenswet’s Superman can remain pure, not boring or naive, but idealistic and firm in his principles. Superman isn’t just about strength. James Gunn seems to get that. By correcting the missteps of the past Gunn and Corenswet have a real shot at delivering the best version of Superman.
