The upcoming animated film promises some major changes to the origin story of Dick Grayson and Jason Todd.
Batman’s First Two Robins Get A Surprising New Origin Story In ‘Dynamic Duo’
The film is set to delve into the early lives of the first two Robins, and seems poised to stray from the comic-book formula and tell a story about friendship, survival, and the decisions that ultimately drive two brothers in arms apart. Personally, that’s what makes the project so fascinating.

Newly revealed plot details have the Dynamic Duo as a pair of street kids who grow close and eventually nickname themselves “Dynamic Duo”. That’s a pretty big change from DC Comics history.
Dick Grayson’s journey is traditionally that of a circus performer who later becomes Bruce Wayne’s adoptive father after the death of his parents. Jason Todd’s modern origin, meanwhile, sees him growing up in difficult circumstances before crossing paths with Batman while attempting to steal from the Batmobile.
The animated movie seems to have combined elements of both stories, and from the start, Dick and Jason are more equal. They will not be Batman’s successive sidekicks who meet years later. Instead, they grow up together. It’s a new way of doing things, and it immediately ups the ante emotionally.
A Friendship Destined To Fall Apart
The most intriguing aspect of the movie is how the two young heroes are going to be split up. As the story progresses, Dick eventually joins Batman, while Jason becomes attracted to the Red Hood gang. That division makes it a much more intimate film than it is just an origin story.

It’s no surprise to fans of DC that Dick and Jason end up on very different paths. Dick becomes Nightwing, one of DC’s most esteemed heroes. Jason’s story is darker, leading him to tragedy, resurrection, and his eventual destiny as Red Hood.
‘Dynamic Duo’ has the opportunity to tell a powerful coming-of-age story, instead of another traditional superhero adventure, by focusing on the moment their lives start to diverge. Even more interestingly, the film isn’t part of the main DC Universe continuity. That allows the creative team to do whatever they want with these characters.
