There has been a lot of discussion about the new trailer for ‘Lanterns’, but one thing has been mentioned more than anything else: the Manhunters. The series will likely revolve around Hal Jordan and John Stewart solving a series of disturbing events.

Still, the introduction of the Manhunters could have much bigger consequences for the future of the DC Universe.

Could ‘Lanterns’ Finally Bring Martian Manhunter Into the DCU?

One of the biggest talking points from the recent ‘Lanterns’ trailer is its repeated focus on the mysterious Manhunters. Several shots hint at shape-shifting figures hiding among ordinary people. The trailer never explicitly explains who, or what, the Manhunters are. Yet it strongly suggests they are central to the show’s mystery.

For longtime DC fans, the word “Manhunter” immediately brings another iconic hero to mind, J’onn J’onzz, better known as Martian Manhunter. While no official word has come out, ‘Lanterns’ might be the most logical place to introduce him.

It’s a great prospect as Martian Manhunter has been underutilized in live-action movies, even though he is one of the founding members of the Justice League. The character’s combination of great power, intelligence, compassion, and detective skills is ideal for the grounded mystery that Lanterns seems to be telling.

If the show is creating a conspiracy involving the Manhunters, having someone who has a deep knowledge of their history could add to the stakes and provide a new hero for the audience to rally behind.

The concept is even more intriguing when considering how well Martian Manhunter fits into the expanding DCU of James Gunn. The franchise already has cosmic adventures and other less popular characters from DC’s mythology, so no stone is left unturned.

Instead of a big crossover event, J’onn can make a big splash on his debut by helping out with the investigation of Hal Jordan and John Stewart. His detective skills would work well with the Green Lanterns. His telepathic powers would bring a whole new dimension to the universe.

It will also be a breath of fresh air from an audience standpoint. For decades, Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman have been the stars of the film. Martian Manhunter has not been given the same level of focus on the big screen.

It would be good to give him a role in the DCU, one that isn’t just there for popularity. As of yet, nothing has been confirmed, but ‘Lanterns’ has definitely created the perfect opportunity. If DC Studios is going to introduce one of the Justice League’s most underrated heroes into the mix, it may just be the perfect medium for this mystery-filled series.
