Why ‘Black Adam’ Producers Were Forced To Cut 5 Violent Killings From The Film?

As the comic book-inspired movie ‘Black Adam’ hits the theatres this week, there have been revelations that the film had to cut back as many as five scenes from it. Producers Beau Flynn and Hiram Garcia confirmed this in a recent interview with Collider. The movie is led by actor Dwayne Johnson playing the role of Teth Adam, a former slave who gets superpowers from God and hence proceeds to save the people of his town.

The film is set to be released on October 21, with two official trailers so far. We see yet again the world of DC doing its magic. Dwayne is seen to be a saver of the human race, although in his own unique form. One of the most interesting things about the movie is that it includes Pierce Brosnan, Noah Centineo and Sarah Shahi among its lead cast.

Why Did The Producers Cut Multiple Scenes From ‘Black Adam’?

Black Adam is originally a character that was created for DC comics. He has been portrayed as a DC ‘antihero’ for his unusual ways of doing good in the world which often involves gruesome violence. The creators wanted to stay true to his character while evolving the movie, and hence might have gone a bit overboard when it came to his combat scenes. ‘Black Adam’ is currently rated a PG-13 for scenes of violence and language. However, initially, the movie led to an original rating of R, and the creators had to make some necessary changes.

Producers Flynn and Garcia confirmed with Collider that the film had to go through four rounds of editing. They had to cut a total of five moments (or killings) so as to lower the MPAA rating from R to PG-13. The crew knew that they were walking on edge with the scenes, however, they still went forward with it as they wanted to stay true to the lead’s character. Flynn says that they had to compromise a bit, but they did not cut any full scenes.

What Do Producers Flynn and Garcia Have To Say About The Cuts?

In producer Garcia’s words, “We really wanted to make sure that we honored the character of Black Adam. One of the things he’s known for is his aggression and violence, and to do a Black Adam movie that didn’t have that just wouldn’t have been authentic. So we always went into this knowing that we were going to push it as far as we did.

Co-producer Flynn added, “It took four rounds with the MPA, and the movie just got the G-13, I think, maybe four or five weeks ago.
