Kevin Feige has successfully led the expansion of the Marvel cinematic universe. DC, on the other hand, has fumbled from the start. James Gunn and Peter Gunn were brought in as CEOs for DCU for structural rebranding. Speaking at the press event for unveiling the new DCU slate, Peter Safran shared his opinion on the scraped ‘Batgirl’ movie by Warner Brothers.
Peter Safran believes that the notion behind the cancellation of Leslie Grace starrer ‘Batgirl’ is out of proportion. He believes that shelving the movie was purely a business decision made for the betterment of everyone involved. Despite the cancellation, he looks forward to working with the creative team behind ‘Batgirl’ for future projects.
Why Did Warner Brothers Cancel Leslie Grace Starrer ‘Batgirl’?
Canceling the ‘Batgirl’ movie was a drastic decision. It had completed most of its production, but Warner Brothers opted to call the entire project off. Ultimately, ‘Batgirl’ with Leslie Grace in the lead, met the fate of being a tax write-off for Warner Studios. Many of the movie’s cast and crew reacted to the cancellation, but Warners stood by their decision,
Peter Safran has defended the decision in a conversation with Variety, saying, “Batgirl’s a character that inevitably we will include in our story. On the Batgirl front, it’s not about late in the process of the film getting canceled. I saw the movie, and there are a lot of incredibly talented people in front of and behind the camera on that film.”
“But that film was not releasable, and it happens sometimes. That film was not releasable. I actually think that [president and CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery David] Zaslav and the team made a very bold and courageous decision to cancel it because it would have hurt DC. It would have hurt those people involved,” he further added.

Will ‘Batgirl’ Be A Part Of The New DCU?
As Safran said, Batgirl is a significant component of DCU storytelling. DCU’s recently announced slate of projects gave us an idea of the direction James Gunn and Peter Safran are heading towards. It won’t be far from presuming that Batgirl will show up sooner than we expect.
Given the focus on intersectional storylines, Safran may have given away the character’s upcoming appearance in their newly revised DCU. After announcing their forthcoming projects, Gunn and Safran are still looking for ways to stay in association with the creative team behind ‘Batgirl.’
