Why ‘Lizzie McGuire’ Reboot Got Canceled
Jonathan Hurwitz, who was one of the writers for the reboot version of the show, revealed a potential reason why the show was probably scrapped. And it has a lot to do with an inappropriate joke.
The first joke, which was a straightforward quotation from the beloved Broadway musical ‘A Chorus Line‘, was one of several that Hurwitz revealed in the videos as being a source of conflict between the creative team and their managers. Roughly eight times, the line ‘tits and ass!’ is sarcastically strewn across the beloved song ‘Dance: Ten, Looks: Three‘. It turns out that the producers felt that Hurwitz and his writers’ choice of wording was too corny when they wanted a character to sing a certain bar from the famous song.
Hurwitz then revealed in another episode that he and the writers had written for Lizzie to wake up one morning in bed with her former high school boyfriend, Ethan Craft, when her “animated Lizzie” persona would appear with a small cartoon “to-do” list for the day, marking off a box that simply stated, “Ethan.” Hurwitz stated that that moment was probably one of the reasons when considering the plots and sequences that could have affected Disney’s choice to scrap the movie.

‘Lizzie McGuire’ Reboot Storyline
Jonathon Hurwitz also revealed what the idea was behind the reboot of the show. “Basically, it starts in New York,” Jonathan said in a TikTok video. “Lizzie’s been working and living there as an interior designer, and she’s dating this very, very handsome chef. And she ends up finding that he’s been cheating on her with her best friend.”
“She, at the end of the pilot, goes home to California—to the home we all saw in the original show,” Jonathan continued, “and she’s in her childhood bedroom where little animated Lizzie has been waiting for her.”
In case you’re wondering if Lizzie meets Gordo again in this potential script, then, yes. “You would have got an answer to that in episode two,” Jonathan explained. “Lizzie meets up with Gordo, who she’s just kind of been in touch with via text over the years, occasionally. And they meet up, and Gordo reveals that he is engaged, engaged to a woman, and she’s pregnant and they’re really happy. So no, in this version, Lizzie and Gordo would not have ended up together.”
It’s unclear as of now if the project will be picked up again or if it will never see the light of the day. But for us, a reboot of Lizzie’s now adult life will certainly be nostalgic and fun to watch. Hopefully, the producers pick up the project again.
