‘Friday the 13th‘ is easily one of the most iconic horror film franchises of all time. Its main villain, the hockey mask-wearing Jason Vorhees, is a part of our popular culture. The franchise started out in the 1980s during the peak of the slasher genre right after ‘Halloween‘ was released.
However, after multiple films that were poorly received, the franchise reached a slow and natural death. Now, works on a prequel series titled ‘Lake Crystal‘ has started. Let’s find out more details about this upcoming Peacock show that has got horror fans excited.
‘Friday The 13th’ Prequel ‘Crystal Lake’: Cast, Plot, And Release Date
On the eve of Halloween, Peacock announced a prequel series on the popular horror film franchise ‘Friday the 13th‘ titled ‘Crystal Lake.’ Bryan Fuller will serve as the writer, showrunner, and executive producer of the series.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, it will be produced by A24, a studio known for backing amazing indie flicks. Fuller has been the television creator behind shows like ‘American Gods’ and ‘Star Trek: Discovery’.
While there is no official announcement on its cast and release date, the series is expected to chronicle the events of how camp crystal lake came to be. It might also touch upon the initial years of Jason and Pamela Vorhees.
The popular franchise was tangled in complex rights deals as it moved from Paramount to New Line. This resulted in a years-long copyright dispute between the first film’s director-producer Sean S. Cunningham and original screenwriter Victor Miller.

The Long Dispute Over The Crystal Lake Killer
The franchise started in 1980 and became a popular slasher flick among audiences. It spawned several sequels and cross-overs, but most of them were poorly received.
In May this year, Miller came out victorious, earning control over the script and original characters but not over the title or the concept of an adult Jason or even the hockey mask.
Fuller, who will be helming the prequel, said: “I discovered Friday the 13th in the pages of Famous Monsters magazine when I was 10 years old and I have been thinking about this story ever since.”
He continued, “When it comes to horror, A24 raises the bar and pushes the envelope and I’m thrilled to be exploring the campgrounds of Crystal Lake under their banner. And [NBCUniversal’s] Susan Rovner is simply the best at what she does. It’s a pleasure and an honor to be working with her again.”
