Matthew Perry, who played the world-famous sarcastic character Chandler Bing in ‘F.R.I.E.N.D.S.’ has written a memoir ‘Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing’. In the book, he talks about his drug addiction, his fling with Julia Roberts, and in a more subtle way his apparent hate for Keanu Reeves.
He has revealed a bizarre hatred of Reeves in his new memoir, and fans just can not picture why. Although the ‘Matrix’ actor is well known for his loveable personality and kind gestures, it comes as a shock for fans that Perry dislikes Reeves. Know more about the hate Perry has for Reeves in his tell-all memoir.
Matthew Perry Took A Dig At Reeves For Phoenix’s Death
In his memoir, Matthew Perry mentions his friend, the late actor River Phoenix and Heath Ledger. He writes, “Why is it that the original thinkers like River Phoenix and Heath Ledger die, but Keanu Reeves still walks among us?” This is the first clue that caught readers off-guard when they understood the shade of hate Perry throws at the Canadian actor.
The troubled star of the sitcom ‘Mr. Sunshine’ made his first movie, ‘A Night in the Life of Jimmy Reardon’, in 1988 with Reeves’ long-time best friend, River Phoenix. Perry played Phoenix’s best friend in the movie. The pair became close pals while filming in Chicago until Phoenix passed away from an overdose at age 23 in 1993.
Perry writes in his book of Phoenix’s death: “River was a beautiful man inside and out and too beautiful for this world, it turned out. It always seems to be the really talented guys who go down.” The actor, known for his sarcasm, also wrote how he sobbed when Phoenix died outside the Viper Room in West Hollywood. He wrote: “I heard the screaming from my apartment; went back to bed; woke up to the news.”

‘Friends’ Alum Wanted Reeves Dead Instead Of His Friends
Perry also gets in another dig at Reeves in his memoir, following Chris Farley’s death. While battling addiction at the height of his ‘Friends’ fame and playing Chandler Bing, Perry signed on to film ‘Almost Heroes’, a 1988 comedy co-starring Farley. When he found out that the ‘SNL’ star had died of an overdose in 1997, at age 33, he took a dig again at the ‘Constantine’ star.
He once again seemed to think it wasn’t fair that Reeves was still alive instead of his friends. “I punched a hole through Jennifer Aniston’s dressing room wall when I found out,” he writes. “Keanu Reeves walks among us,” he said. Fans could not think of a reason why Perry might have hatred for Reeves, since the two have never co-starred in any projects.
In his memoir, Perry also writes about his decades-spanning drug and alcohol addiction, and how he spent millions of dollars on rehab. He also talked about his colon burst from opioid use and much more. “I wanted to share when I was safe from going into the dark side of everything again,” Perry told PEOPLE. “I had to wait until I was pretty sober – and away from the active disease of alcoholism and addiction- to write it all down. And the main thing was, I was pretty certain that it would help people.”
