Who Ruled Westeros After Rhaenyra Targaryen?
Rhaenyra was King Viserys I’s only living child by his first wife, Queen Aemma of House Arryn. She was made her father’s heir when she was only eight-years-old. She grew up expecting to be the first ruling Queen of Westeros. However, her claim to the throne was challenged by her younger half-brother Aegon II Targaryen. This sparked the civil war known as the ‘Dance of the Dragons’.
The firstborn son of Princess Rhaenyra was Prince Jacaerys Velaryon, also known as Jace. When Rhaenyra was crowned Queen during the ‘Dance of the Dragons’, she named Jacaerys as Prince of Dragonstone and heir to the Iron Throne.
However, in the civil war, all of her firstborns died and Viserys’ eldest son Aegon II Targaryen claimed the throne ignoring Rhaenyra’s status as heir.
