Angelina Jolie’s Relationship With Her Father
Angelina Jolie has had a turbulent relationship with her father, actor Jon Voight. He was married to actress Marcheline Bertrand but the two divorced when Jolie was an infant.
The divorce is attributed to Jon’s affair with someone which he later admitted. Even though he supported his ex-wife and children financially, Jolie was never close to him. She was raised solely by her mother.
In 2001, Jolie won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in ‘Girl, Interrupted‘. In the speech, she publicly thanked her father and said, “Dad, you’re a great actor but you’re a better father.” The same year Jolie wanted to adopt a child but her dad blew up the news in an interview. It almost stopped the adoption due to strict Cambodian rules.
In 2002, Jon expressed his concern over Jolie’s mental health issues. He asked people to “see that she gets help for unspecified ‘mental problems‘” after her divorce from Billy Bob Thornton.

The Deterioration Of Father-Daughter Relationship
Later, Angelina Jolie said, “I don’t want to make public the reasons for my bad relationship with my father. I will only say that, like every child, Jamie and I would have loved to have had a warm and loving relationship with our dad. After all these years, I have determined that it is not healthy for me to be around my father, especially now that I am responsible for my own child.”
The two were not in touch for five years. Jolie also did not use his last name, Voight. She legally dropped her last name after his 2002 interview.
“I did not want to be Voight, as an actress, because people would react to the name,” Jolie told The Sun in 2011. Later, Jon wanted to speak to Jolie at a party but he was stopped by her manager.
Their relationship deteriorated and Jon did not attend her and Brad Pitt’s wedding. But as time heals everything, she eventually got closer to him after her divorce from Pitt.
