A Sturgeon Moon is to occur on August 1, 2023. Following this, there would be a second full moon in the same month making it a blue moon. The Sturgeon Moon will be the year’s second supermoon to occur. The moon on this day would be brighter and bigger than the average full moon.
There are four consecutive supermoons this year. They occur as the Moon’s orbit is closest to the Earth at the same time as there is a full moon. Thus the supermoons are 16% brighter than the usual full moons, reports CBS News. The first full moon of August is called “Sturgeon Moon” as this was the time when sturgeons were easily caught from the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain during summers. The second full moon of the month is called the blue moon. The blue moon occurs on average once every three years. It will occur on August 30 this year. The next blue moon will be in May 2026.
This blue moon is the third among the four consecutive supermoons. This penultimate supermoon will be much close than the preceding ones. The last among the supermoons will occur on September 28, 2023. This will be called the “Harvest Moon”.
