Who Was Oppenheimer? Where Was He Born?
J. Robert Oppenheimer was an American theoretical physicist. He is most famously known as “father of the atomic bomb“. His role in the Manhattan Project has been instrumental in its success.
Robert’s parents came to the States in 1888 from Hesse-Nassau province of the Kingdom of Prussia. Oppenheimer was born in New York City in 1904. His initial education was at Alcuin Preparatory School but later he became a part of the Ethical Culture Society School. And later on, he went to Harvard to pursue his higher studies. Robert also attended the University of Cambridge and the University of Göttingen where he studied physics.
Because of his immense knowledge and successful career, Oppenheimer was made the head of the Manhattan Project. After the war, he became the chairman of the influential General Advisory Committee of the United States Atomic Energy Commission. However, he got caught up in communist problems and his security clearance was revoked. In his final days, the ‘father of the atomic bomb‘ spent his time with his wife and daughter on the island of Saint John.

What Was The Manhattan Project Led By Oppenheimer?
Before World War II started, America started work on the first-ever atom bomb. Oppenheimer was hired by James B. Conant to look after the fast neutron calculations.
Thus the Manhattan Project came about. The military took charge of the discovery of the atomic bomb from the scientific department. And Oppenheimer was set as the chief scientist of this Project Manhattan. This top-secret mission was decided to be conducted in a centralized, secret research laboratory in a remote location.
And this is when Oppenheimer assembled a group of the finest physicists and scientists at that time from across the country. This team was known as ‘luminaries’. The Manhattan Project became the codename for the first atom bomb.
