Why Was The Golden Globe Awards Not Televised In 2022?

The Golden Globe Awards will take place on January 10th, 2023. This year there have been some veterans and newcomers in the list. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) is responsible for conducting the awards. The press members, through voting, decide the nominations and winners for the coveted trophy across the television and celluloid artists and films.

In 2023, films like ‘Tár’, ‘Elvis’, ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’, and ‘RRR’ are nominated. Actors like Adam Driver, Colin Farrell, Cate Blanchett, Ana De Armas, and others are contenders for the award. However, in the past few years, HFPA and Golden Globes have been plagued by many controversies. Due to this, many actors and online audiences boycotted the show. Along with the people, the broadcasting channel also decided to not televise the show in 2022.

Why Did NBC Refuse To Televise The Golden Globe Awards?

In 2022, the 79th Golden Globes had an unusual event. The event did not telecast on its traditional broadcast channel, NBC like its predecessors at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The HFPA released a statement that there will be no telecast of the event due to the health concerns during the Omicron rise. The presenters and awardees were only present members in the room with all the precautions taken.

The results got announced on social media. However, there was a deep seething reason for no telecast of the award show. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association received a heavy backlash due to lack of diversity and safekeeping. The Los Angeles Times released a report in 2021 which hinted that there was no single member from the Black community in the 87 members panel. It was also accused of gatekeeping and not letting journalists from other countries get in due to its stringent process.

After the report, its long time broadcaster NBC decided not to telecast the awards ceremony. The broadcasting network released a statement citing the reason. It said, “We continue to believe that the HFPA is committed to meaningful reform. However, change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right. As such, NBC will not air the 2022 Golden Globes”.

NBC was not alone in boycotting the awards ceremony and calling the exclusionary behavior of the HFPA. Warner Media, Netflix, and Amazon also called for a boycott. One of the actors who took major steps to protest against the press council was Tom Cruise. The actor gave all his Golden Globe trophies away. He won the award for his performances in films like ‘Magnolia’, ‘Jerry Maguire’, and ‘Born on the Fourth of July’. Scarlett Johansson, Regina King, Mark Ruffalo, and others also boycotted the awards.

In 2022, the HFPA had 105 members. In a press release, it also revealed the percentage of people on the panel from various ethnicities. It had 19.6% Latinx, 12.1% Asians, 10.1% Black, and 51.8% racially and ethnically diverse groups. So, NBC decided to return as the original broadcaster. Frances Berwick, the Chairman of the Entertainment Networks at the NBCUniversal Television and Streaming released a statement.

He said, “We recognize the HFPA’s commitment to ongoing change and look forward to welcoming back the Golden Globes to NBC for its landmark 80th Anniversary in January 2023”.
