Loki has been burdened with a secret no other Marvel character could ever possibly have understood for years. In the finale of Loki Season 2, he gave up his normal life and took control of the timelines, ensuring the existence of the Multiverse.

It was a pretty good end, and a pretty good tie-in. If ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ changes the world, then Marvel could have a solution to that sacrifice without killing him or finding another character to take his place.

‘Secret Wars’ Could Change What Loki’s Job Means

What’s crucial here is that Loki’s throne is only there because the present Multiverse requires someone to keep its branching timelines. This might all change after ‘Secret Wars’. Marvel has already shown with ‘Loki’ that timelines are able to continue to expand while Loki holds them up.

‘Secret Wars’, however, will directly address the fall and rise of reality. In the comics, the Multiverse was destroyed during the battle between the Beyonders, and Doctor Doom used its remains to build Battleworld. Reed Richards and the heroes start to rebuild the Multiverse after the defeat of After Doom.

The MCU doesn’t need to follow that exact story. If it’s the same concept, however, the conclusion may completely change the rules that put Loki on that throne in the first place. And that’s where Steve Rogers could become a fascinating red herring.

Loki Might Not Need A Replacement

The most logical explanation is that another hero may come along and replace Loki. It would be a fitting tribute for Captain America to sacrifice himself and become the new guardian of reality. However, a much more satisfying answer exists: No one replaces Loki.

With ‘Secret Wars’ creating a new reality that doesn’t need one being to keep it together, Loki’s sacrifice may not be needed anymore. That would make his ending even more meaningful. Loki would not have to die for the Multiverse.

He wouldn’t have to give his throne to another hero. He might just be set free from a duty he didn’t want to take in the first place. Loki finally leaving after holding the reality together for everyone else to enjoy their freedom would be very fitting. Sometimes, the most fitting conclusion for a character who gave it his all is not another sacrifice. It’s freedom.
