The return of Benedict Cumberbatch felt inevitable for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, but his role has been unknown. Now, a new rumor suggests the actor will not be reprising his role as Doctor Strange.
Marvel Might Be Taking Benedict Cumberbatch In A Bold New Direction

As per the industry scooper MyTimeToShineHello, Cumberbatch will reportedly be playing the role of long-time Doctor Doom ally, Boris. If the claim turns out to be true, it would be one of the boldest casting choices in the MCU’s history. And it would also be a surprising role for one of Marvel’s biggest stars.

Boris is most famous in Marvel Comics as a faithful follower of Victor von Doom and the royal family of Latveria. He has been traditionally portrayed as a loyal caretaker, not a frontline fighter or a magician. However, the newest tidbit is that Marvel is drastically changing the character.
Boris is expected to carry a sling ring and will be a wizard, alongside Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom. That would be a huge change from the comics, and could be the reason why Marvel has been so quiet about Cumberbatch’s involvement.
The rumour also aligns with the actor’s teasing remarks regarding his MCU future. While at first he claimed that Doctor Strange wouldn’t be in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, he later clarified that fans shouldn’t believe everything he says. Since then, there have been more theories about his role.
Marvel Could Be Hiding A Much Bigger Surprise

Even if the Boris rumor is accurate, many fans are likely to wonder whether that’s the full story. Marvel has a long history of keeping major plot twists a secret until the movies are released, especially in their biggest crossover movies.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ will unite heroes from various universes, like the Avengers, Fantastic Four, and X-Men, so the Avengers’ role may be just a small part of a much bigger picture. We don’t yet know what role Boris will play in the alternate universe: Doctor Doom’s magical advisor, or something even more bizarre.
As of yet, the casting is based on speculation. However, if Cumberbatch is indeed departing from Doctor Strange to take on one of Doom’s closest friends, it would immediately make one of the most surprising creative moves leading up to ‘Avengers: Doomsday’.
