Matt Murdock might have defeated Wilson Fisk, but his battle is far from over. Charlie Cox has offered a glimpse into the emotional journey awaiting him in ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Season 3, teasing a story that will push Matt into unfamiliar territory.
Charlie Cox Explains What Prison Means for Matt Murdock

After exposing his secret identity and helping bring down Fisk’s rule over New York, Matt finds himself behind bars, facing the consequences of his choices. Speaking about his character’s future, Cox explained that victory hasn’t brought Matt much peace.

“Despite the fact that he has rid New York of Wilson Fisk and he has paid a heavy price for that, he’s still tormented. He’s still grumpy about a lot of things.” It’s a fitting direction for a character who has spent years struggling to balance his responsibilities as a lawyer with his violent crusade against crime.
Even when Matt wins, he rarely escapes without losing something along the way. Season 3 will place Matt in a dramatically different environment, taking him away from the streets of Hell’s Kitchen and into prison. According to Cox, this change will be central to the character’s development.
“What’s fun about Season 3 is we get to see him in a new environment. What prison does to a man like Matt Murdock is very interesting,” the actor teased. The situation is particularly complicated because Matt is no ordinary prisoner.
He has spent years putting criminals behind bars, and now he must share a confined space with people who may see him as an enemy. The Season 2 finale left him imprisoned alongside members of Fisk’s Anti-Vigilante Task Force, setting up plenty of potential conflict.
Daredevil Loses More Than His Freedom In Season 3

Perhaps the most compelling part of Cox’s comments concerns Matt’s identity. “He’s no longer operating Daredevil. He’s no longer a lawyer. So, there’s a lot of juicy stuff there,” the actor explained. For Matt, these aren’t simply two jobs.

Being a lawyer allows him to fight for justice within the system, while being Daredevil lets him protect people when that system fails. Losing both leaves him without the two roles that have defined his life.
That makes Season 3 particularly exciting. Rather than immediately returning Matt to his familiar routine, the series has an opportunity to explore who he is when he can no longer be either version of himself. With the third season confirmed as the show’s final chapter, Matt’s prison storyline could deliver an emotionally challenging conclusion to his journey.
