Chris Evans Gets Real About The Weight Of Portraying Captain America

For nearly a decade, Chris Evans embodied the heart and soul of Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. From his first appearance in ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’ to his emotional farewell in ‘Avengers: Endgame’, Evans’ portrayal of Steve Rogers became synonymous with the hero.

Moreover, his time as Cap officially ended with an elderly Steve Rogers passing the iconic shield to Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson. Now, the actor has spoken up about the difficulties behind playing such a character.

It’s a two-way street,” Evans said. “There’s responsibility that comes with it, but also a lot of pride. It feels like a lot. But then that pressure morphed into an honor.” Evans’ words echo the sentiments of many actors who have played iconic roles. There is a great deal of pressure to live up to the expectations of fans.

However, there is also a great deal of satisfaction in knowing that you have played a part in something special. Mackie now carries the weight of the role in ‘Captain America: Brave New World’, set for release on February 14, 2025. However, recent rumors have thrown a twist into the equation: Is Evans actually returning to Marvel?

“I talked to Chris a few weeks ago, and it wasn’t on the table then,” Mackie said. “At least, he didn’t tell me it was on the table, because I asked him. I was like, ‘You know, they said they’re bringing everyone back for the movie. Are you coming back?’ He goes, ‘Oh, you know, I’m happily retired.’”

Of course, the biggest question remains: Is Chris Evans really returning to the MCU? The actor himself weighed in, and his answer was clear. “That’s not true, though,” Evans told Esquire, directly addressing the reports. “This always happens. I mean, it happens every couple of years, ever since Endgame. I’ve just stopped responding to it. Yeah, no—happily retired!”
