DC Comics is taking Green Lantern into some seriously dark territory with its newly announced series, ‘Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos’. The six-issue Elseworlds story is scheduled to release in January 2027 and will see Hal Jordan become humanity’s most dangerous threat, turning the DC Universe into a war zone.
And the biggest surprise: this take on Hal Jordan’s story starts with a terrible betrayal from a close friend, Green Arrow, aka Oliver Queen.
‘Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos’ Turns Humanity Into The Villain

‘Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos’ will be officially revealed by DC Comics on October 20. The first issue will be released on January 20, 2027, under DC’s Elseworlds imprint, where creators can explore worlds outside DC’s main continuity.

The concept is really fascinating. For centuries, humanity has been conquering planets and expanding its empire throughout the galaxy, and the Green Lantern Corps is the final force to stand in its way. Hal Jordan is initially a member of the human race, but he is betrayed and left on an alien planet.
The Green Lantern Corps eventually rescues him, and after helping him break free from his former loyalties, recruits him as its first human warrior against the empire he once served. It’s a fascinating reversal for a character traditionally celebrated as one of Earth’s greatest protectors.
Oliver Queen’s Betrayal Could Change Everything

Perhaps the most shocking element is Oliver Queen’s role in Hal’s downfall. A friendship that has been at the heart of both characters’ comic book history is destroyed when Oliver turns on him and leaves him for dead, according to the official synopsis of DC.

That raises questions in his mind about why Oliver turns against Hal and if there will be any opportunity for the two to reconcile in this other universe. The first-look art also hints at a violent, war-torn world, and the team behind it seems to be enjoying the freedom of an Elseworlds tale.
‘Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos’ might offer a fresh spin on the Green Lantern character, particularly for those seeking a superhero narrative infused with cosmic terror and moral ambiguity.
