Disney CEO Bob Iger Blames Marvel TV Series For Apparent Downfall In Marvel’s Popularity And Loss Of Business

Marvel and DC are not going through a good phase right now as both franchises are struggling to bring good box office results for their projects. Meanwhile, Disney CEO Bob Iger has finally addressed the failures, saying that Disney+ shows are responsible for the same.

MCU has introduced various characters over the years. But the minor and powerful characters did not get much importance in films featuring an ensemble cast. Marvel Studios finally decided to give these characters their standalone storylines in the form of TV shows that would be aired on Disney+.

Bob Iger stated that people are now expecting more from Disney+ shows

During his appearance at the Sun Valley Conference, Bob Iger addressed the failure of the latest MCU projects, saying that audiences have been expecting a lot from the Disney+ shows which have reduced their interest in the films.

He added, “It’s reflective not as a problem from a personnel perspective, but I think in our zeal to basically grow our content significantly to serve mostly our streaming offerings, we ended up taxing our people way beyond – in terms of their time and their focus – way beyond where they had been.”

According to Iger, Marvel was rarely involved in the TV business in the past, and this time they planned a lot of things equally in terms of films and TV shows. Iger added that this was the main reason why the latest projects could not deliver the expected results.

‘Elemental’ was also one of the highly anticipated animated films of 2023 and it has already been rated 71% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the box office results have not been up to the mark.

Addressing the same, Bob Iger said that Disney decided to release three Pixar movies through Disney+ during the Covid-19 pandemic. According to Iger, the release of the three animated films on Disney+ increased the expectations and audiences could not accept ‘Lightyear’ and ‘Elemental.’

A majority of Disney+ shows that were scheduled to premiere this year have been postponed to 2024 due to the mixed reaction toward the last few projects. ‘Secret Invasion’ premiered on June 21, 2023, but it has received mixed reviews and now the response towardsLokiSeason 2 and ‘Echo’ is being questioned by experts.
