Elizabeth Olsen Talks About Marvel Giving Her “Feelings Of Insurance”
At the Vulture Festival, Elizabeth Olsen opened up about how her time with Marvel has impacted her ability to pursue more intimate and experimental projects. She expressed her love for the franchise and that she never felt she was unnecessarily involved. “I’d never really had the mentality of ‘one for them, one for me,’” Olsen explained.
“Marvel has been such a consistent thing I’ve been able to return to and has created, what’s the word? some feeling of insurance in my life that has given me the freedom to choose other jobs,” she added. Moreover, for Olsen, Marvel is not an obligation. Instead, it’s a foundational part of her career that has allowed her to explore roles that challenge her artistically.
While some actors might view blockbuster roles as a trade-off for creative fulfillment, Olsen clarified that her experience has been the opposite. She emphasized that her return to the MCU has “always felt like a choice.” She further emphasized that each new opportunity to play Wanda Maximoff has been driven by character development.
“Every time, it’s character-driven,” Olsen said. “It’s always like, ‘We have this idea, and that’s why we want you to come back.’ It’s not like, ‘Just throw her in something,’” she explained. This commitment to meaningful storytelling has made Olsen’s portrayals and the Scarlet Witch compelling and nuanced.
