One of the episode’s most entertaining moments comes when Ultron delivers the line “The power of code compels you,” a playful parody of the famous exorcism phrase. It is a fittingly twisted joke for Ultron. The episode also references the anniversary of the Battle of Sokovia, bringing ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ back into the conversation.

The destruction of Sokovia remains one of the defining events in Ultron’s history, making the callback particularly meaningful. Stark Industries also gets a mention through its longstanding connection to advanced artificial intelligence.

That history naturally brings familiar names into the spotlight, including Edwin Jarvis, whose MCU legacy extends beyond the films through ‘Agent Carter’. F.R.I.D.A.Y. receives an intriguing historical connection of her own. The reference to Howard Stark’s “Girl Friday,” Alison Hogan, adds another layer to the complicated history of AI within the Stark family.

Perhaps the most exciting reference for longtime Marvel enthusiasts is Dr. Phineas Horton, the scientist responsible for creating the original Human Torch, Jim Hammond. The character predates the modern Marvel superhero era, making his inclusion a neat nod to the publisher’s Golden Age beginnings.

There is also a connection to 12 Monkeys, with Markridge Biotech serving as a reference to the science-fiction series associated with ‘VisionQuest’ showrunner Terry Matalas. It is a small detail that connects the series to its creator’s previous work. With references spanning classic Marvel history, the MCU’s past, and Matalas’ earlier work, Episode 4 offers much more than a few nostalgic moments.
