In the MCU, Odin is revered as the wise king of Asgard, who ultimately chose peace over conquest. However, ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ subtly reveals something that makes his history much more complicated: the Infinity Gauntlet in Odin‘s vault was fake.

That’s an interesting question. What was the point of Odin having a fake Infinity Gauntlet?

One of the theories is that Odin might have had ambitions that were eerily similar to Thanos’s. Odin and Hela were once the fierce warriors who ruled over many worlds, spreading the influence of Asgard through their power. So maybe Odin eventually came to understand that the Infinity Stones had something even more powerful to offer him.

He might’ve discovered that they have the power to impose his sense of order on the universe as a whole. The biggest connection to Thanos comes from the Soul Stone. To obtain it, Thanos eventually sacrificed Gamora, proving that he was willing to lose someone he loved for what he believed was the greater good.

Odin might have come to the same point before him. There was, however, one important difference. Odin was not willing to let go of Hela. His greatest weapon in their conquest was his daughter, Hela. Instead of killing her to obtain the Soul Stone, Odin may have chosen to imprison her and abandon his plans for universal domination.

That makes the fake Gauntlet a completely different thing. It is not just an elaborate prop in Odin’s treasure room but may be the remains of an ambition he purposely buried. Eventually Odin turned from conqueror to protector, but the traces of his former dream were lost in the vault.

Thanos Might’ve Got The Infinity Stones Idea From Odin

This theory is even more interesting when it comes to the fact that Thanos was aware of Odin’s history. The MCU has never really explained how much the Mad Titan knew about the ancient rulers of the Nine Realms. Odin might’ve once gone on a quest for the Infinity Stones.

But his failure to succeed could have been a legendary event throughout the galaxy. Maybe Thanos learned from Odin’s errors. Odin was the one with the power, the armies, and the ambition, but he wasn’t ready to sacrifice. Thanos, on the other hand, believed that love was not a factor in his quest.

There’s no record of whether Thanos was inspired by Odin, but the connection is certainly intriguing. Maybe Odin didn’t just retire from conquest. Maybe he abandoned the exact path Thanos later completed.
