Is Red Hulk From ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ Related To 2008’s ‘The Incredible Hulk’?

The MCU shocked fans at Comic-Con 2024 when they revealed footage of Harrison Ford’s Red Hulk in Captain America: Brave New World. The appearance of the iconic Hulk foe has fans speculating about his place in the history of the MCU. However, the film’s stars have clarified that this new Hulk is not directly related to the one teased over a decade ago in ‘The Incredible Hulk‘.

In an interview, Harrison Ford addressed previous comments he had made that seemed to tie his character into the events of the 2008 film. “I did know, and I thought it was a spectacular secret to keep” Ford said. “Unfortunately, the secret’s out of the bag.” This suggests Ford’s earlier confusion was intentional misdirection rather than a revelation of the film’s actual plot points. So let’s see what the main man Anthony Mackie said on this same topic.

‘Captain America: Brave New World’ To Feature A New Origin Story

Anthony Mackie while speaking to Entertainment Weekly, clarified new Captain America movie’s take on Red Hulk is developing the character separately, not continuing the 2008 storyline set for Ross. “This Red Hulk is his own unique creation for the MCU” Mackie explained. “While it may draw from the comics, this version of the character has a distinct backstory and path within our world.” He went on to say, “We’re building new foundations for the future with each piece we introduce. It’s not about directly continuing past elements but expanding upon them creatively“.

So, rather than being a follow-up to the tease in ‘The Incredible Hulk‘ over 15 years ago, ‘Captain America: Brave New World‘ looks to establish its own origin for General Ross’s Red Hulk. When asked about the Red Hulk comparisons, Ford said, “I don’t actually have any knowledge of the character from the comic books or previous films. I’m playing this version as its own unique creation for the MCU“.

Mackie emphasized the fact that this movie will be completely independent of the 2008’s happenings and also shared a fun moment where he had to explain to Ford about it in detail. It seems fans will have to wait for the film’s release to get clues about what specifically triggers Ross’s change and powers in this reboot of the character.

The Blip To Be Important In New Captain America Movie

The film is supposedly trying to look past the incidents of the blip, rather than revisit the past. Mackie noted in the interview, “Brave New World is a great title for this film. It’s a new beginning, and it’s a foundation on which Marvel will build the universe on now.” The star sees this Captain America film as an opportunity to place the future alongside reimagined heroes and villains for the newer generation. Red Hulk’s standalone origin independent from 2008 falls in line with this vision to push the franchise forward for its next saga.

Fans are ecstatic and eager to see what the film has in store for them. While it may or may not have connections to the past, it is sure to push a new era of the MCU with additions like Red Hulk.
