What’s better than seeing Robert Downey Jr. in his Iron Man suit again? Well, we were very close to getting it. ‘Deadpool And Wolverine‘ is smashing all the box office records and it’s time to dive into what more the movie could have served.
Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the co-writers of the latest MCU movie, shared some insights and close calls made by ‘Deadpool And Wolverine‘. They shared that RDJ was nearly cast for a role in the film before his role as Doctor Doom in the upcoming ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘.
Early ‘Deadpool And Wolverine’ Script Revived Iron Man
‘Deadpool And Wolverine’ fulfilled all the Marvel fan’s wishes. But the thing we still miss is Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man. Even though the character has died in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there were chances of him appearing in ‘Deadpool And Wolverine’.
In an interview with IndieWire, Reese and Wernick were asked about the scene featuring Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan in ‘Deadpool And Wolverine‘. The writers revealed that the character was written keeping in mind both Favreau and Downey. “We had wanted him to do a cameo,” said Wernick. Reese added, “Ryan Reynolds read the scene with both of them, so in the hopes we could get Downey. But he also wanted Favreau, because they’re a great combo, and they were all in the scene together.”
However, there were bigger plans for RDJ than ‘Deadpool And Wolverine’. He had a grand entry in the MCU but this time as a villain called Doctor Doom. Wernick explained, “Behind the scenes, we didn’t know about the Doctor Doom thing“. “And there’s no way he was going to do both.” Despite Reynolds’ best efforts to secure Downey for the film, the timing just didn’t work out.”
He added, “Ryan gave him the hard press. We wrote scenes, and Downey read the scenes, but what we didn’t know behind the scenes was this Doctor Doom thing.”

What Would Iron Man Have Done In ‘Deadpool And Wolverine’?
Reese also has an answer to how RDJ’s role would have looked in ‘Deadpool And Wolverine’. He explained, “It was a version of what you saw in the sense that he rejected Wade. He just said he wasn’t a team player or whatever and questioned his team-player abilities. So it was actually pretty close to the scene that you saw. It just had two guys instead of one.”
But Favreau ultimately stepped in and took over all the spotlight. He proved himself and delivered a memorable performance. The directors could only imagine how Downey would have looked.
Reese continued, “We would’ve loved to have Downey. But, at the same time, I think Marvel had this ace in their hole, which is he’s about to come back in this different character. So, to have him be Tony Stark? Knowing that Doctor Doom was coming on the heels of that? It just didn’t make sense.”
