For over a decade, Robert Downey Jr. has been the main attraction of the MCU as Tony Stark. Now, with his return as Doctor Doom, the Oscar winner says the biggest adjustment wasn’t learning a new character, it was discovering what it feels like to stand on the opposite side of the battlefield.

As for his experience, Downey said that he had to deal with a different emotional change when he was cast as the iconic villain of Marvel, as opposed to when he was cast as Iron Man. The actor said Tony’s personal trauma eventually led him to becoming a hero, willing to sacrifice everything to protect others.

In contrast, Doom’s pain and ambition have made him one of Marvel’s most formidable enemies. “I mean, there’s the science thing, and then they’re considered pretty brilliant guys. But Tony had the trauma that kind of turned him into a hero, and Doom’s got the exact opposite,” he told EW.
That difference is what makes Doctor Doom such a formidable threat. It takes the combined strength of numerous heroes to challenge the villain’s power. The scene in which those characters banded together to fight against Doom was one of the most satisfying moments for the actor. “It takes the prowess of all of these folks to go up against him, and it was a joy to behold.”

In addition to the character itself, Downey said that the villain’s role was a different environment he had never encountered while playing Iron Man. He said the “bad guy mask” was an isolating experience.

“It was really weird being on the other side of a bad guy mask because it’s such an isolated vibe. I’m seeing them all socializing and stuff, and I’m the enemy,“ he shared. It was an odd turn for an actor who had been at the helm of Marvel’s heroes on and off screen for years.
He was no longer in the middle of the Avengers, but rather the one who was on the opposing side. Even though it was an unusual experience, Downey made it clear he also had a lot of fun. By taking on the role of Doctor Doom, he was allowed to delve into a whole new aspect of the Marvel universe.
It also reunited him with many of the actors who helped shape the franchise. His comments for fans provide yet another look at why his return is so enticing. Downey is not just playing a genius in armor, he’s exploring what happens when brilliance, pain and ambition lead a man down a far darker path.
