Robert Downey Jr. Was Supposed To Play An Important Role ‘Fantastic Four’ Before Joining The MCU As The Iconic Iron Man

We can never imagine anyone else as Tony Stark aka Iron Man other than Robert Downey Jr. When it comes to the MCU’s most iconic characters, Iron Man always comes on the top. And so does RDJ’s exceptional portrayal of the character. 

However, it seems that boss Kevin Feige had approached the ‘Chaplin’ star for other roles in the MCU. Downey Jr. was initially considered for a role in ‘Fantastic Four’. Deadline reports how Feige revealed the story in an interview recently.

Director and co-star Jon Favreau revealed in a 15th-anniversary retrospective of Iron Man’ how Robert Downey Jr. was initially meant to play other roles in the MCU. Downey Jr. auditioned for the 2005 ‘Fantastic Four’ movie. 

“I remember you had all met with him already for like Doctor Doom or something on another project,” Favreau recalled. “I think he had come through on maybe Fantastic Four, so everybody sort of knew who he was.” However, we all know that the role went to Julian McMahon and Downey Jr. ended up playing the billionaire philanthropist.

After Iron Man’s sacrifice and the exit of Robert Downey Jr. from the MCU, Marvel took a big hit. There is no doubt that the 59-year-old actor was an integral part of the MCU.Iron Man‘ director and Downey Jr’s dear friend Jon Favreau feels the same. He praised Downey Jr. as “the puzzle piece that made it all work” in Iron Man. 

He even added, “I remember sitting down with the guy, and I was like, ‘He’s got that spark in him in his eye and he’s ready.’” Favreau continued, “That’s when we were in your office, and we were pointing to his headshot, saying, ‘We got to try to figure this out.’ Once it was him, that’s when my life got a lot easier.” Favreau also said, “Because he is the voice of the character. And then one by one, people were just signing on board because now it became something interesting.” Downey Jr. played the character in 10 movies.
