Kevin Feige revealed that Sebastian Stan has pitched him an idea for a new Winter Soldier film. And it’s a far cry from the typical MCU blockbuster. Rather than another multiverse crisis or a city-destroying villain, Stan envisions a smaller, darker thriller, grounded in the intensity of Sicario.
Bucky’s Past Comes Back To Haunt Him
The idea is simple, yet deceptive. Bucky Barnes runs into a familiar face, maybe one related to the past in which he was under the control of HYDRA and was turned into the Winter Soldier. The issue is that Bucky doesn’t remember completely who this person is and what they did.

The uncertainty might be the core of the story. Bucky starts to probe the enigmatic figure, delving into his past that he’s long forgotten. As his memories gradually come back to him, he wonders if they are real or if someone is playing a game with him.
That leads to a psychological conspiracy thriller of espionage, paranoia, and close-quarters killing. It would also allow Sebastian Stan to show the audience that Bucky is more than just another superhero.
The Winter Soldier Still Has Unfinished Business
The most exciting part of the idea is how much untapped history Bucky still has. He spent decades operating as HYDRA’s weapon, meaning there could be countless people connected to his missions who are still alive.

What if someone who worked with HYDRA knows something Bucky didn’t? What if a man he was assigned to kill still lives and has been waiting years for his revenge? And what if someone is still working under the Winter Soldier program?
One day, Bucky’s past suddenly becomes a mystery to be solved. Stan has made it clear that his pitch was at least partly a joke, and there is no officially announced Marvel movie based on the concept. Still, it is difficult not to get excited about the possibility.
A tense Winter Soldier thriller could be a breath of fresh air after all the increasingly cosmic MCU stories. Sometimes, Marvel doesn’t need another apocalypse. It just requires a broken man, a buried secret, and someone from his past who refuses to stay buried.
