Sophie Thatcher is one of Hollywood’s hottest new stars, but not in the traditional sense of the word. Thatcher’s career has been defined by her ability to select projects that are unconventional and have a strong focus on character.

That’s why the fan campaign to have her portray Rogue in Marvel’s upcoming X-Men reboot is so interesting. Many actors are out there openly campaigning for superhero roles, but Thatcher’s response is more thoughtful.

Sophie Thatcher Wants More Than Just A Big Franchise

The actress has confirmed that she has seen some fan art of herself as Rogue, as it spreads around the internet. However, her desire to join a big franchise seems to be more than just playing a popular character. In recent remarks, Thatcher indicated that any major project would have to have something of substance creatively.

“I’m open if it’s a director that’s down to collaborate and listen to me… I would just want to make sure it’s the right story being told, especially if it’s such a huge franchise.” She doesn’t appear to be attracted to the size of a franchise, but rather whether the story has something to offer.

This is a view that is very similar to the career she has developed to date. Thatcher has not sought to be a part of the mainstream. She has repeatedly turned to work that offers her the opportunity to delve into the unusual characters and the challenging material.

As ‘Yellowjackets’ comes to a close, she has more time to explore. She seems to be eager to keep her range of films expanding with roles in upcoming comedies, thrillers, and science fiction films.

Why Rogue Could Be Different

There is one Marvel character who might appeal to Thatcher’s sensibilities: Rogue. Rogue is more than a superhero at heart. Her powers produce isolation, loneliness, and a constant search for human connection. The character’s emotional depth has helped make her one of the most beloved members of the X-Men for decades.

Those themes might be a natural fit for the sort of complex characters that Thatcher frequently plays. Meanwhile, she would be making a big career change by joining the MCU. However, a long-term franchise agreement may restrict her ability to do the things she has done in recent years to be creative.

It’s what makes the discussion so interesting. At the moment, Thatcher is more interested in telling stories than anything else. It’s ironic because that’s exactly why so many fans think she’d be an unforgettable X-Man.
