Superheroes Skrulls Impersonated During Marvel’s Secret Invasion

Marvel has just released one of its most ambitious projects, ‘Secret Invasion,‘ starring Cobie Smulders, Samuel L. Jackson, and Emilia Clark. This limited series is set to be the first series in the MCU’s Phase Five and the third installment of the year after ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3’.

The events of 2008’s version of Secret Invasion completely destabilized the Marvel Universe. A fair share of heroes was replaced by Skrulls in this event to take over the Earth which saw the aliens replace agents with almost every major Marvel team.

In the 2008 release, New Avengers Iron Man brought Elektra’s corpse to the Illuminati in an attempt to configure Skrull’s devious plot. Black Bolt then revealed himself as another Skrull attacking the rest of the members of the Illuminati.

However in the ‘Secret Invasion: Inhumans,’ Black Bolt lost his throne to his brother, Maximus. The Skrulls planned to use Black Bolt’s sonic scream as a weapon and then were rescued by his wife Medusa.

Hank Pym

At the end of the 2008 Secret Invasion, Hank Pym was revealed to be a Skrull. In 2008’s Mighty Avengers revealed a flashback in which Hank was incapacitated by a young college student shortly after Avengers Disassembled.

The Skrull replaced him, becoming Hank Pym, and presented the Wasp with a new growth formula which was secretly a Skrull weapon. The Wasp then grew into an enormous size, giving off an energy that nearly killed everyone. This repercussion forced Thor to send her into the Microverse.

New Avengers issue 40 revealed that Spider-Women was replaced by the most important Skrull named Queen Veranke. The Queen was hell-bent to make Earth into the Skrull homeworld. She replaced Spider-Women shortly before she joined the New Avengers due to her mysterious past and heroic image.

After replacing herself as Spider-Women, Veranke manipulated S.H.I.E.L.D., New Avengers, and Hydra leading to infiltrating the groups. After Civil War, Veranke betrays the New Avengers and brings the Skrull Elektra’s body to Tony Stark.

Captain Marvel

Captain Marvel

The original Captain Marvel had been dead since 1982’s version of The Death of Captain Marvel. However, Captain Marvel returned in 2007’s ‘Civil War: The Return’. Mar-Vell was a sleeper agent for the Srull, believing himself to be the real Captain Marvel. He was then sent to attack Thunderbolts Mountain, yet Norman Osborn convinced him to turn on the Skrull. After taking down many Skrull, Captain Marvel ultimately died a hero.

Elektra

Elektra

Elektra was the first of many Skrulls to be revealed at the beginning of the Skrull invasion. In 2007’s issue of New Avengers, Electra was killed by Echo during a battle with the New Avengers.  It was revealed in 2008’s Mighty Avengers that Elektra was immobilized and superseded by the Skrulls months earlier. The Skrull who replaced Elektra was chosen specifically so she could die, revealing the Skrull infiltration and sowing the seeds of mistrust among Marvel’s heroes.
